The Association of Oriental Arts [TAO ARTS] (Black ink, and watercolor) is hosting two workshops for 2010:

In January TAO ARTS was part of the Year of the Tiger: Annual Exhibition of Paintings and Flowers, in the Irving Arts Center Main Gallery (Brush paintings and ikebana from the Association of Oriental Arts, the Dallas Chapter of Sogetsu School and the Dallas and Fort Worth chapters of Ikebana International).

Irving Art Association presents Spontaneous Combustion with Judy Melvin
April 17 & 18, 2010: 9:00am - 3:00pm - Saturday and 9:30am - 5:30pm Sunday

This workshop is full of tricks and techniques which are applied to actual design projects. The vision of this class is to control the full of failure and to encourage participants to work quickly on several pieces at once…jumping from one to the other spontaneously.
Judy works with a myriad of media…bring whatever you have and we will try and use it. These 2-days will be fast-paced, positive and fun.
The focus is to add to the individual vision of each artist. The class will be fast-paced, electric and fun! Collaborations are also encouraged. Come and celebrate the joy of creating and opening your mind to new solutions and ideas!

Two Days of Writing, Poetry & Bookmaking in a contemplative atmosphere

When:
March 8 and 9, 2010 at 9:00 am- 5:00 pm [March 6 & 7 is already filled]
In this workshop, we will:
- Begin with one’s own handwriting and work with it visually as a means of expression.
- Incorporate writing exercises and poetry to include the auditory and tactile aspects of making words.
- Learn ways to make their handwriting have rhythm and beauty, as well as including poetic facets of assonance and alliteration.
- Each student will take home a small handmade book.
- This class is for anyone interested in hand lettering, watercolor, bookmaking and poetry in a contemplative atmosphere.
- All levels of experience are welcome.

The 55th Annual Irving Art Association Members Juried Art Show will be on exhibit April 25 to May 28, 2010 at the Jaycee Center. Juror will be Chris Fulmer. For complete information, see the 2010 IAA Juried Show Prospectus.
Members should take note that the entry deadline is March 26 and preregistration and prepayment is REQUIRED. Digital images (by email or on CD) is the accepted format. You can now also enter online and pay by PayPal or a credit card through PayPal. See the Registration page.
If you need assistance with digital entries, there will be aid provided on March 23 10am-12noon at the Jaycee Center. Contact Show Chair Brenda Mattioli for details.

Tony Saladino will do an acryrlic demonstration at the IAA members meeting on Tuesday, January 26th at 7:00 pm. His topic will be “From the Real to the Abstract.” He will show how to make an abstract painting by using what we already know and letting our own “marks” and individual perspectives take over.

Tony Saladino was born in New Orleans. His work is in the collections of the National Museum of Fine Arts, Hanoi, University of Wisconsin - Parkside, University of Dallas, Wichita Falls Museum, Museum of International Art, Bahia, Brazil, McNeese State University, Lake Charles, Louisiana, Museum of Art and Archaeology, University of Missouri, and Parkersburg Art Center - Parkersburg, West Virginia. He is listed in Who’s Who in American Art, and Who’s Who in the South and Southwest. He has taught at The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and Oxbow Summer School of Art, Michigan. You are invited to the TAO Arts annual art show, The Year Of The Tiger, a show of Oriental Paintings and Ikebana Floral Arrangements. The opening reception will be held this Sunday, January 10, 2010, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm at the Irving Arts Center and will include a lion dance and art demonstrations. The show will hang through January 24, 2010. TAO Arts is an association member of IAA.

Irving Art Association’s Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition pulls entries representative of the the best of American art! It is an honor simply to be hung in this show. The 25th Exhibition is open to all artists 18 and older living in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Up to three works of art may be entered by an artist for an entry fee of $35. More than $8,000 in prize money!
The exhibit will run May 22 through June 26, 2010 at the prestigious Irving Arts Center, which is cosponsoring the event with IAA. Juror is Judy Melvin and there will be a Juror Talk & Reception April 16 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm. The Reception and Awards Ceremony will be held May 23 from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm. For entry details see the prospectus. For online submission of images go to http://texasandneighbors.com/form2010.htm. Payment may also be made online through PayPal. Entries can also be submitted on CD by mail.
On January 30, 2010 from 2:00 - 4:00 pm, a workshop “Shooting Your Artwork for Digital Submission” will be given at the Irving Arts Center in order to help artists convert from submitting slides to using digital images for entries. The artwork of thirteen artists who submitted images was selected by the IAA Board for inclusion in the 2nd annual IAA Calendar. The calendar is published in full color on 8&1/2″ x 11″ size cardstock which opens to a 11″ x 17″ format. It includes a schedule of IAA events –meetings, painting groups, exhibits, classes & workshops. Keep up with what’s going on and enjoy the beautiful artwork too! Plus the money raised on sales of the calendar goes to benefit the art association.
