3 Workshops—3 Levels

Learning the Basics is the most important element to being able to draw. The second is practice, practice, practice. These 5 day workshops will give you the foundation to be a great artist in any medium you choose.

Each workshop builds upon the next, if you have never drawn before I recommend taking the first workshop. These workshops are also great for the seasoned artist to take time and get back to basics.

Continue reading »]]> The 27^th annual Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition awards presentation was held Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Irving Arts Center. Awards and cash prizes were presented to 19 artists for Best of Show, the Award of Excellence and for 1^st thru 3^rd place and honorable mention in four categories. 

Ann Hardy of Colleyville won Best of Show and $1,500 for White Pumpkin, oil painting. A full list of award recipients is listed below.

Texas & Neighbors is a juried art competition featuring work in a variety of mediums from artists in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico and Louisiana. Approximately 74 pieces were selected for the exhibition from nearly 400 submitted works. Albert Handell, a Santa-Fe-based pastel and mixed media artist, judged the show.

Angie Vangalis, Chairman and President of the Irving Art Association considers it a privilege to coordinate and manage the submission process. There were a total of 141 artists who submitted images for juror, Albert Handell to deliberate upon. The submission breakdown by state: 119 -Texas, 8 – New Mexico, 3 – Oklahoma, 2 – Louisiana, 4 – Arkansas.

For the fifth year, The Chocolate Rose treated patrons to a spectacular selection of floral sculptures and arrangements that complement various pieces of artwork during the first week of the exhibit. For images see the 2012 subalbum of the IAA Photo Album on Photobucket.

The exhibition is presented by the Irving Art Association and the Irving Arts Center and will be on display in the Arts Center’s Main Gallery through May 26. Continue reading »]]> The Reception and Awards Ceremony for the 57th Annual Irving Art Association Members Juried Art Show was held on Sunday, May 6. The show will be on exhibit May 1 to May 24, 2012 at the Jaycee Center, with a traveling Winners Exhibit June 2 to July 8 at the Irving Arts Center Focus Gallery. 26 artists and 59 pieces are included in the 2012 show.

Thanks to Exhibit Chair Beverly Fuqua for again doing a wonderful job! Encaustic Workshop May 20, 2012 12noon – 4pm Fee: $65.00
Adults only Class is limited to 10 students.

This introductory, two day workshop in encaustic painting will teach students/teachers to paint in the ancient, non-toxic medium of beeswax-based paint. Each workshop takes place at Irving Arts Association and features basic core information, including the history of encaustic, health and safety, and the fundamentals techniques of painting and fusing. The workshop will cover the following painting techniques: how to create depth and transparency, texture or ultra-smooth surfaces, transfer of drawings or Xerox®, stencils, and collage.

Workshop Provides :

Paint, medium, wax, brushes The use of all equipment including: Tools, hot palettes, heat guns, irons Printed technical data sheets Some paper for monotypes – extra paper can be purchased at the workshop

Student’s supplies to bring:

Rigid surface (ampersand boards 12”x 12”, Masonite or other hard surfaces) (Sketchbook for notes. Collage materials: Xerox® prints, pieces of handmade papers, thread, small 3-D objects to mbed. Charcoal (soft) Oil pastels (sennelier are recommended) A roll of paper towels (Viva) Painting clothes or apron. Small jar of linseed oil

Instructor Junanne Peck is an interdisciplinary artist, with printmaking, painting and encaustics as her main art forms. She is a seasoned educator and Teaching Artist in the DFW area. Junanne Peck is a TXO Artist (Texas original Artist) selected by the Texas Commission on The Arts. Her works are featured in solo and invitational exhibits. The members meeting of the Irving Art Assocation will be on Tuesday, April 24th at 7 pm at the Jaycee Park Center for the Arts in Irving. (directions)
The artist VET will give a brief overview on how to paint big and small murals using basic theme development, design layout and paint applicaitons on various surfaces. She will discussion the use of stencils, grids and projections to transfer images. VET is a native Texas artist who incorporates environmental recycling awareness through her artwork, commissions, classes and workshops.  She introduces the fine art of recycling through innovative assemblages, reliefs and sculptures that offer practical solutions to reduce reuse and recycle.  Her Found Objects Studio is in the Deep Ellum Arts District where she creates and teaches innovative ways to re-think, re-purpose and re-design discarded items.  In addition to her wide variety of cultural-based and educational arts programs, VET tours nationally and regionally offering classes, workshops and other customized programming.  She is a graduate of the University of Texas Dallas (BA Arts and Performance). VET’s wor has been on exhibit throughout the U.S, Canada and Africa; andd she is both a National Endowment of the Arts (NEA) andd Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA)  receipient.

THURSDAY, APRIL 5, 2012 Decorated and built up letters is the focus of this Creative Studio Night. We’ll create ways to hand letter using monoline pen, calligraphy markers, and more. Remember, at CSN you don’t need to bring anything unless you want to.
