Texas & Neighbors

txnlogo.gif This prestigious five-state competition pulls entries representative of the the best of American art! It is an honor simply to be hung in this show. The Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition is open to all artists 18 and older living in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma. Up to three works of art may be entered by an artist for an entry fee of $35. Approximately $4,500 in prizes!

The judge who juries the show from submitted images and then selects the winning works of art in person is an artist of national standing or a prominent expert in art. The show is hung in the prestigious Gallery of the Irving Arts Center, cosponsor of Texas & Neighbors, for a month in the spring.

January 10, 2009 - Workshop: Shooting Your Artwork for Digital Submission, Irving Arts Center
January 27 - Final date for receipt of digital images and entry forms. Those received after this date will be rejected.
February 8 - PREVIEW NIGHT Entry Viewing, Irving Arts Center, 7 p.m.
March 3 - Notice of acceptance mailed.
March 30 – April 3 - Ship accepted entries to Irving Arts Center to arrive no later than April 3, 2009
April 4 - Hand-deliver accepted entries to Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd. 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
April 26 - Opening Reception & Awards Ceremony 2 – 5 p.m.
April 25 – May 23, 2009 - Show hangs in the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., Irving TX
May 24 and 26 - Pick up hand-delivered works between 1 and 5 p.m. on May 24 and 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 26

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS -
1. Digital Images will ONLY be accepted (no slides or photos)
2. Name each .jpg file with the artist’s last name and first initial with entry number corresponding to entry number on the entry form. (EXAMPLE: Smith, A1; Smith, A2).
Upload JPG files (or burn on CD) with 300 pixels per inch resolution and a width and/or height maximum of 1800 pixels/6 inches.
3. Images should show ONLY the work of art (no frame, easel or background). Images of accepted entries will become the property of IAA to be used for the catalogue and other printed material, archives, website and for educational purposes. 4. Check or Money Order in the amount of $35 made payable to Irving Art Association may be mailed OR submitted online via PayPal.
5. Works must classify in one of the following categories:
–Oil or Acrylic on canvas.
–Water media on paper.
–Mixed media - collage, calligraphy, hand-pulled prints or the use of two or more mediums. Collage must incorporate two-dimensional, self-created elements.
–Drawing - includes Pastel, Color Pencil, Graphite, Ink, Silver, Gold, Conté Crayon, etc.
Submitted works of art must be two-dimensional originals completed within the last two years without instructor supervision. Works previously accepted into
the Texas and Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition are ineligible.

JUROR is RANDALL M. HASSON. He studied calligraphy prior to discovering what would become the unique merging of two worlds - lettering and image upon canvas.
He has served as a lecturer and instructor on the faculty of five international Calligraphic Lettering Arts conferences. His calligraphic, artistic expression can be found in his Santa Fe gallery and private collections worldwide. A partial list of commissions include Hobby Lobby, Inc., Dimension One Spas, Hasson Inc., American Dairy Parks,
The Cramer Institute, Mt. Soledad Pres.. Kim Hill Music, Challenged Athletes Foundation, Brede Investments, Master Potter Ministries and the C.S. Lewis Foundation.

His work has been featured in publications including Somerset Studio Magazine, Ranch and Coast Magazine, Art and Antiques Magazine, Décor & Style, and Letter
Arts Review. Randall appears in “The History of Calligraphy” DVD. He also has a cameo writing appearance on Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” DVD. (Special Features section of the 2nd DVD; “Below Decks”>”A Prisoner’s Tale”).

Randall M. Hasson brings a new and valued perspective to the Art world. His use of lettering, combined with illustration creates a feast for the eyes and in depth compositions that take the viewer to multiple levels of interpretation. The written word is used in his paintings to create visual and emotional impact, inviting the viewer to “discover” elements over time that may not be discernible at first glance. For 2008: Juror is Pamela Nelson is a Dallas-based painter and public artist. Ms. Nelson studied studio art at Southern Methodist University (B.F.A. 1974) and lived in Europe and the Middle East before settling back in Dallas. She has exhibited her art in galleries and museums since 1979. A committed community activist, she has served on numerous boards and commissions, started an art program for the homeless and mentored many young artists as a teacher. Ms. Nelson firmly believes in the power of art and environment to lift the community. This awareness developed as she designed four light rail stations for the new DART rail system in Dallas in the early 1990s. Since 2001, she has served on the U. S. Commission of Fine Arts, a review panel in Washington DC that meets monthly and advises on art and architecture in the District. Ms. Nelson’s other honors and awards include the 8th Annual Legend Award from the Dallas Visual Art Center and City of Dallas Urban Design Awards for the TIF Streetscape Project. Recently completed projects are 24 stained glass windows for First United Methodist Church of Richardson, Color Equations, an art theory installation at NorthPark Center in Dallas and Destination Game, a floor medallion at DFW International Airport. For 2007:
The judge for the 22nd Annual competion was award winning artist and author Naomi Brotherton, who is included in many publications and is the author of “Variations in Watercolor”. She has also recorded three videos. Naomi is listed in Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who of American Women, Notable Women of Texas and her personal papers are recorded in the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. She is a charter member of National Museum of Women in the Arts. Naomi has had more than 45 one-woman exhibits and participated in numerous group shows. Naomi is a graduate of Baylor University with a degree in art and studied at the Art Students League and Art Career School in New York and has done extensive studies with other nationally known watercolorists. She is a signature member of five organizations and has been instructor in innumerable workshops coast to coast. She has been instructor/partner in Artisans Studio Gallery in Dallas since 1980 where she teaches weekly classes and workshops. For more information, see her website at Artisan’s Studio Gallery. For 2006:
The judge for the 21st Annual competition in 2006 was Janie Gildow. She is a nationally-known artist, primarily in colored pencil, but she also likes to experiment by combining it with other media. She is the author of two well-received books on colored pencil techniques: Colored Pencil Explorations and Colored Pencil Solution Book (co-author with Barbara Newton), both published by North Light Books. Her work has been featured in numerous books, including Best of Colored Pencil (numbers 2, 3, 4, 5), Exploring Color, rev, ed., Best of Flower Painting 2 and others. She has also been included in the major art magazines: The Artist’s Magazine (1994, 1999, 2001), International Artist (2000, 2002), and American Artist (1994, 2000). She is also the winner of numerous awards and is a signature member of CPSA, Colored Pencil Society of America, where she is currently on the Board as an Honorary Director. She teaches workshops, mainly in colored pencil, and her background includes a degree in art education and plenty of experience in the field. The prospectus is available online: Word version.
For 2005:
The judge for the 20th Annual competition in 2005 was Doug Dawson, who has been teaching art for more than 20 years, and is the author of “Capturing Light and Color in Pastel”. He has earned the Master Pastelist title awarded by the Pastel Society of America and has been collecting awards at every turn. Doug Dawson was an instructor at the Colorado Institute of Art from 1978-1996 and a founding Board Member of the Art Students League of Denver. He currently teaches at the Art Students League of Denver and the Colorado Christian University. His workshops are noted for the information he shares with his students during each step in the painting process. His work has been included in close to 50 magazine articles, and in 1993 has was named “International Man of the Year” by the Men of Achievement, London, England.
For 2004:
The judge for the 19th Annual competition in 2004 was Patricia Meadows, who has given thousands of hours to the arts and to civic endeavors. Best known for her unabashed support of regional artists, she was co-founder of Dallas Visual Art Center where she originated the Collectors, the Legend Award, and the Critic’s Choice juried exhibition. Also, she has organized and curated hundreds of exhibits locally, regionally, and nationally including three exhibits for the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C. Ms. Meadows has been listed in Who’s Who in American Art since 1984. She served as president of the Dallas Art Dealers Association for two years, four years on the Dallas Museum of Art’s Acquisition Committee and on the boards of the Dallas Arts District Management Association and the Mid-America Arts Alliance in Kansas City, Missouri. She also served as an advisory panelist for the visual arts for the Texas Commission on the Arts. She is the owner of Art Connections, an art consulting business that specializes in corporate and private collections. Ms. Meadows is the art curator for Hall Office Park, a 162 acre multi-tenant office development, in Frisco, Texas. Under her supervision, more than 100 works of art have been installed in publicly accessible locations within Hall Office Park. The signature art section is the Texas Sculpture Garden, a four-acre site at the entrance of the development, which showcases contemporary sculpture by 38 well-known Texas artists.
For 2003:
The judge for the 2003 competition was watercolorist Paul Jackson. At age 21 Paul Jackson won his first award from AWS. At age 30 he was the youngest signature member of AWS. Other awards include: Grand prize in MisterArt.com’s “Paint Your Way to Paris”, Best of Show, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia exhibition, and Kansas Watercolor Society. He has been featured multiple times on the cover of Artists Magazine as a competition award winner. He has also been featured several times on the cover of Watercolor magazine, in Master Painters of the World Showcase, International Artist Magazine, and American Artist. Works in collections: Missouri Governor’s Mansion, Supreme Court, and the Missouri State Capitol. Has recently been featured at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and the White House. He received a MFA from University of Missouri, and currently serves as the University’s Resident Master Artist. He was on the cover and was the featured artist in Watercolor Magic, Summer, 2000. For 2002:
The judge for the 2002 was Rob Erdle, Visual Arts Professor at the University of North Texas from 1976 to present. He previously served as Gallery Director for the Chautauqua National Exhibition of American Art at the Chautauqua Institute of New York. He was juror for Watercolor USA 1989, Rocky Mt. National 1996, NWS Award Juror 2000, and the Laredo International 2001 Art Exhibition. He has participated in over 120 group exhibitions and has had 30 solo exhibits spanning the U.S., Russia, Taiwan Portugal, and Switzerland. By special invitation he was the first western watercolorist to exhibit in The People’s Republic of China since 1960. Update: Juror Rob Erdle chose 94 pieces to make up the 2002 Texas and Neighbors Show for 2002. A total of 188 artists entered 505 works. Eight IAA members were chosen to be in the show.
