Winners of the 2012 Texas & Neighbors Exhibition

The 27th annual Texas & Neighbors Regional Art Exhibition awards presentation was held Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Irving Arts Center. Awards and cash prizes were presented to 19 artists for Best of Show, the Award of Excellence and for 1st thru 3rd place and honorable mention in four categories. 

Ann Hardy of Colleyville won Best of Show and $1,500 for White Pumpkin, oil painting. A full list of award recipients is listed below.

Texas & Neighbors is a juried art competition featuring work in a variety of mediums from artists in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico and Louisiana. Approximately 74 pieces were selected for the exhibition from nearly 400 submitted works. Albert Handell, a Santa-Fe-based pastel and mixed media artist, judged the show.

Angie Vangalis, Chairman and President of the Irving Art Association considers it a privilege to coordinate and manage the submission process. There were a total of 141 artists who submitted images for juror, Albert Handell to deliberate upon. The submission breakdown by state: 119 -Texas, 8 – New Mexico, 3 – Oklahoma, 2 – Louisiana, 4 – Arkansas.

For the fifth year, The Chocolate Rose treated patrons to a spectacular selection of floral sculptures and arrangements that complement various pieces of artwork during the first week of the exhibit. For images see the 2012 subalbum of the IAA Photo Album on Photobucket.

The exhibition is presented by the Irving Art Association and the Irving Arts Center and will be on display in the Arts Center’s Main Gallery through May 26. For more information about these organizations visit or The Irving Arts Center is located at 3333 MacArthur Blvd., Irving, TX.

  • 1st Place ($500) – Nancy Paris Pruden of Houston, TX, Yellow Parrot Tulips, 28” x 34”.
  • 2nd Place ($400) – Cecy Turner of Dallas, TX, Last Rites of Day, 20” x 30”.
  • 3rd Place ($300) – Gaye Kelly of Highland, TX, Waiting for Jimmie, 24” x 28”.
  • Honorable Mention ($100) – Jene Gravley of Irving, TX, Ben, 19” x 23”.

Water Media: 

  • 1st Place ($500) – Carol Flori of Texarkana, AR, The Veteran #2, 36” x 45” .
  • 2nd Place ($400) – Gaylord O’Con of Dallas, TX, Green Dragon, 22 “ x 28”.
  • 3rd Place ($300) – Michael Holter of Plano, TX, Three Lenses, 18” x 22”.
  • Honorable Mention ($100)  – Gail Delger of McKinney, TX, Mitosis, 37” x 21”.

Mixed Media:  

  • 1st Place ($500) – Karin Michele Anderson of Dallas, TX Tangled Orchid, 30” x 30”.
  • 2nd Place ($400) – Colleen Erickson of Weatherford, TX, Lady in the Park, 42” x 34”.
  • 3rd Place ($300) – Laurie Huff of Rockwall, TX, Just “Be”, 24” x 20”.
  • Honorable Mention ($100) – DebiLynn Fendley of Arkadelphia, AR, Thousand Mile Stare,
    13” x 20”.


  • 1st Place ($500) – Russell Mackensen of Dallas, TX, A Blue Plate Special, Pastel, 34” x 29”.
  • 2nd Place ($400) – Jeff Potter of Alameda, NM, Mount Cochetopa Storm, Pastel, 18” x 22”.
